![]() I've seen a few problems with people trying to board DARTs via the automatic barriers with OAP passes.
Is there any move afoot to get Smart Passes ? I know the new "All Ireland Travel Pass" is a Senior SmartPass. Is there a plan to use these with the new barriers? |

![]() Anyone with a social welfare pass is required to present the pass at the ticket office to be issued the correct ticket. Its been like that for 10+ years
Thus if a OAP has a ticket there should be no difference compared to previous. Barriers are smart card enabled |

![]() It's a bit of a problem when you now have a situation where staff are assuming that everyone can use the vending machines though. i.e. there are unmanned (even if not officially so) stations. Several stations have also opened alternative entrances which are entirely unmanned and have the ticket vending machines and automatic barriers (either of the new or old variety).
It seems reasonable that OAPs should be able to get the Senior SmartPass and use it at DART stations. It's available, for free, as a replacement for the existing Free Travel Pass and can be applied for via any local social welfare or citizens info office. or by calling some 1890 number. It's also accepted by Translink in NI (and must be touched on a smartcard reader on busses etc) |

![]() Smartpass only works up north at the moment
Its simple you need a ticket to travel, it also requires the pass holder to go face to face with a member staff If a station is unstaffed OAP is at no disadvantage to a regular passenger |

![]() Other than that they can't have their pass recognised by the Ticket Vending Machine and thus will not be able to get past the barriers.
That's a *big* disadvantage. |

![]() The situations I've seen involve some little old lady standing at an unfriendly hatch going "HELLOOOOO? Anyone there?.." and turnstiles firmly locked.
One said she pays the child minimum fair to defeat the barriers, then presents her pass on board |

![]() Hey Hey Hey.....Stad Nomeid a chairde ghaeil...
Lets get something quite clear here..... The Senior Smart Pass referred to in other postings here has NOTHING whatever to do with the Republic of Ireland or its Public Transport operators. This exotic device is issued to Qualifying UK Citizens resident in Northern Ireland AND to qualifying Citizens of the Republic of Ireland who APPLY for the Free Travel Concession Extension of validity into Northern Ireland. According to the Dept of Social and Community Affairs Press Release the situation in the republic is that work is "Progressing" on the introduction of a suitable card to replace the present Pass in the interests of improving security and ease of use etc etc etc.... As Colmd sez....Irony.....Are you Joking...show me an Ironic Irish Politician ???? ![]() |
