Mystery plaque to be taken down at O'Connell Bridge
Olivia Kelly

Dublin City Council is to remove a memorial plaque from O'Connell Bridge because it does not know the person commemorated or how the plaque got there.

The bronze plaque, set into the wall on the western side of the bridge, commemorating "Fr Pat Noise" was spotted recently by a Sunday newspaper journalist.

The plaque claims to mark the spot where the priest died in 1919 when his carriage plunged into the River Liffey in "suspicious circumstances".

The council's heritage officer has reviewed historical records but can find no reference either to the priest or the accident, a council spokeswoman said.

Furthermore, the council did not erect the plaque, was not asked permission for its placement on the bridge and has "no idea" how it got there.

The plaque will be removed within days, the spokeswoman said.

We should start a protest. Protect the plaque!

I'm going to go to Paris to dig up the grave of the unknown soldier as I don't know who he is.

Popped up there at lunchtime for a look.

Sorry about the bad camperphone photo. I have some proper photos, but I don't have the means to download them here.

It's a proper pronze plaque that must have cost a fair bit, and it fills a hole that was left by the abandoned milleniunm clock (the chime in the slime). I say let it stay, at least until someone comes up with something better to fill the hole.

It's hardly the first memorial to a person or event of questionable historical accuracy.

I like the signs that have been put up in support of him. Anyone know how long the plaque has been there?

I doubt anyone knows for sure (except the people who put it there), but I'd guess it can't be more than a couple of weeks. I don;t think it could have been there for long without someone noticing, and word spreads fast in this town.

Apparently it was reported on by a Sunday newspaper, though I've no idea which one.

Okay, according to UTV it's been there for three years:

I'd like to know their source for that. I can't believe everyone's been walking by it and noone's noticed. On the other hand, I must have walked by it hundreds of times and never noticed either the plaque or the empty space.

Hmmm, after a little searching, I have come across a photo of the plaque dating from 1st February.

If anyone's interested, my photographs of it can be found here.

I think that has been there for some time. I think I saw it before but didn't really pay attention (why would I?). I'm kind of surprised to hear it is a prank.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council confirmed this afternoon that the mystery plaque on O'Connell Bridge is to be removed.

The prank monument in memory of a fictitious priest, Father Pat Noise, was erected in 2004 but was only noticed by officials last week.

It's emerged that the work is a tribute to the artists' father, and that the name "Pat Noise" is a play on the Latin "pater noster", which means "our father".

A video of the artists installing the plaque is due to be broadcast on national television this evening.
I think we should all go up and chain ourselves to the bridge.

I was right that it had been there for sometime. There was/is a plaque beside the phone boxes on the north/east side of the bridge. Anyone know what that is?

Removing that piece of art from O'Connell bridge is just confirmation that this country has turned into a, stuck up, conformist, self important and ignorant little dirt bin. Our sense of humour and identity has been relpaced by a sense of importance that eats away at the true virtues of what Ireland used to be about.

Dublin city is a badly planned, architecturally inept and dirty landscape. What do the city keepers decide? The art must go. Its an emphasis on nothing compared to the issues that they should really be addressing and never will.

Bad move alright. If nothing else it was a bit of fun.

But now there's presumably just going to be a big hole there. I mean it been there for god know how long and noone's even noticed it. Why did it have to go?

Just to let you all know, the plaque is still there. I saw it on Monday night. It really is quite well made.
