It sometimes makes me wonder when making these decisions what exactly is the DOT thinking? Is a cut in subvention on their minds?

We've been promised a "bloodbath" on spending by the govt.

My Annual short hop bus and rail pass I got set me back €980 in January. Come the end of the year according to this, i will be forking out an extra €210 which is a staggering 21% of what i am currently paying!!!

I'm very surprised none of the papers have copped this. A 21% increase will put a lot of people off buying annual tickets, especially those only travelling a couple of stations.

Also I assume the 2009 timetable won't show any service improvements to match the price increases? I am especially looking for improvements in the 6-12pm suburban services, and the 5am-6.30am services. Trains sitting around in depots - would cost very little to run a few 4 carriage services.

You have hit it on the head Rashers! In the Metro today IE confirmed rises of 15% to Annual passes, but bear in mind people who buy tickets in January will see a rise of over 21% considering they bought their ticket last January. will post the price comparisons in a bit.

I am very suprised the media didn't cop this

I have to say I nearly choked on me porridge this morning when I heard the IR ad on the radio (RTE 1) - you know the new ones telling us all how great the train is and how we should be getting thit instead of driving. Something about not stressing about parking, road rage or rising fuel prices (I'm paraphrasing, so maybe someone has the text of thead). No mention of the 15% hike in their new ads, funny that.

I heard this...they basically said you dont need to worry about rising fuel prices if you travel with IR...well EXCUSE ME...but IR use rising fuel costs as an excuse to increase prices twice in the past 12 mths!!

Methinks a complaint to the advertising standards agency could be in line!!
