Rail dispute hits thousands of passengers

22/05/2008 - 14:39:55

Travel plans of thousands of rail passengers were disrupted following the cancellation of the Cork-Dublin services due to industrial action by train drivers.

All trains from Kent Station in Cork to Dublin were cancelled until 5.30pm this evening with further disruption expected later.

Dublin to Cork services were cancelled from 6pm.

The 6.30 Dublin to Tralee train was also cancelled and Cork commuter routes were affected.

Iarnród Eireann has warned that it would not be able to provide bus transfers to accommodate all passengers.

The dispute centres on drivers rosters.

Update on my father. He was actually going to go from Dublin from Mallow, hoping to get the train that leaves Cork at 10:30. He called up the station in Mallow about 20 minutes ago, not knowing what was going on, to buy a ticket for tomorrow. He was advised not to buy it and keep an eye on the news tonight and in the morning.

With a flight a 4pm, its really a catch 22 tomorrow morning. Because he will have to make the decision to drive at about 8:30 tomorrow morning.

It goes to show that for all the issues in which it resulted in bus transfers costing the company dearly that an agreement with Bus Eireann might help IE.
