![]() The language is a bit extreme: "vast majority". It seems they are trying to downplay the situation rather than using their announcement to inform people of the cancellations.
What do you think Mark? |

![]() Also, including Monday in a post referring to "this weekend" is not really that clever either.

![]() Cheeky putting two or three cancellations on one line also. They can't seem to group them by time or route properly.

![]() I've said it before, but the whole approach of IE to this thing is a joke.
So, the vast majority of trains will operate normally . . . well, whoop-de-doo. We are not in any kind of state of emergency, we are not under martial law, there have been no recent terrorist attacks. All trains should operate normally. The fact that IE have not been given a right kick up the behind by the press, the politicians, lobby groups, or anyone is very surprising. I really cannot understand how there hasn't been more of a fuss made by Joe Public. I saw a post in the last few days where the last train to <somewhere> was cancelled - if I was expecting to get the last train home and found out that just a few hours earlier that day they had announced they weren't going to run it, I would not be impressed. Any ideas how they are going to spin this in terms of reliablity statistics ? I imagine there won't be any new posters up next year saying "99.x% of our trains ran as scheduled last year" - they will probably leave the old ones up from last year. I take it that it's too much to hope that there are any penalty clauses to be expected for consistently cancelling x% of your trains for months on end ? z |

![]() Can someone explain to me what is happening? Under what circumstances can Irish Rail announce on Friday that there will be cancellations on Monday afternoon due to "driver issues"? Did a driver hand in a three day sick cert or something? How, given 72 hours notice, can they not arrange a different driver? Is that part of the problem? Do drivers not cover other services?
A missing 16:16 Pearse - Drogheda is going to be nasty. There will be a lot of extra people on the 16:42. |

![]() Drivers have an entitlement to 2 days off in every 7. Drivers are not working days off. So if they roster a driver to work a day off they know there wont be a driver. If someone calls in sick there is no cover either, there is meant to be a spare driver.
There is a shortage of drivers in Dublin, thats the core problem, can't be denied they advertised internally about 3 weeks ago You will find weekends and Monday to be the worst, mainly since given a choice weekends are where most people want a day off

![]() The 19.10 Connolly Maynooth is going to be nasty this evening and to top it all when it normally runs its four coaches long and crammed to pieces.
There is the 19:20 Docklands Clonsilla and 19:29 Pearse Maynooth if things get bad. |

The implication of this post is that drivers are rostered 7 days, then choose which ones they have off. If that is the case, then whoever agreed that wants shooting - not even sacking. The union negotiators must have been laughing their socks off.... that is even better than the UK where spineless managenent allowed Sundays to become all voluntary working, with the inevitable result in the run up to Christmas, etc. People who work in public transport have to accept that it is a 7 day a week business - if they want a cushy 9-5 M-F, do something else. ![]() The issue at hand here is working days off, where choice always applies
The roster is 5 days out of 7 days, drivers have no choice which days they work or what days off they get, but have 100% choice in what days off they choose to work if requested to do so. One of the days off is meant to be a weekend day. Bear in mind the working time act comes in as well as does the 48 hour per week limit So if they are asked to work a day off on a Sat or Sun its highly unlikely they will come in, more so since there is a semi formal ban in place on working any rest days until Phil Flynn finally tables a solution. Unlike the UK all days are considered equal and the rate of pay is fixed it doesn't mater what time of day or day of the week
