Multi-journey travel with supplementary ticket

Yesterday morning I bought a three day ticket for my usual commute from Drumcondra to Maynooth. This morning I needed to get off at Broombridge, do some work locally and get back on a Maynooth train later in the day. As I knew there are no ticket machines at Broombridge (not much else either) I thought a quick cheat-around was ok. After all, it was still within the journey of Drumcondra to Maynooth.

As I knew that this evening I needed to get to Pearse from Maynooth, I bought a ticket at Drumcondra to Pearse this morning with the intention of using it tonight, you know as a 'supplementary ticket' to my three-day'er. Am wondering how my ticket will get on with Pearse's new machines - it not having been validated for a journey at the beginning. Will let the list know.

Actually, they won't. They'll say "Journey taken, take ticket" and open. I've had this happen before when I've held a single or return ticket and had to use the manual gate to get in at Sandymount due to all the turnstiles being out of order.

I've many a time had a valid ticket which I could not validate (station locked up) and the machines in Pearse refuse the ticket on exit

What Thomas said. The machine at Pearse said "Journey Taken" and something else that I didn't pay attention to for fear that the glass gates would close again. Pity about the €1.50 extra though. Seems a lot for two extra stations.

I can recreate the problem as follows

Purchase return ticket Pearse to anywhere, validate at Pearse.

Upon return ticket is not validated as station closed etc

Turnstile in Pearse refuses with an error complaining about the time being wrong or exceeded
