One person remains in hospital following two accidents involving LUAS trams in Dublin overnight.

Five people were taken to hospital following a crash on the Red LUAS line.

A taxi collided with a tram near Smithfield at around 8.15pm yesterday evening.

Four people who were travelling in the taxi were taken to St James's Hospital.

One person who was travelling on the LUAS was also brought to hospital.

Four of the injured people were later discharged, and the person remaining in hospital is described as stable.

Earlier, a man in his 30s sustained a serious leg injury as he attempted to board a Green line LUAS tram in Ranelagh.

The accident happened at around 12.30am this morning.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.

Any idea of the circumstances of the 'serious leg injury'?
Having a little trouble figuring out how it could happen, I'd assumed the doors, but don't the doors automatically open again if there's something caught in them?

No idea, one can only assume the person was injured as the tram was moving into or out of the station.

my wife witnessed the red line crash

tram was entering smithfield from town side and hit the front of a taxi that was probably breaking a red light heading north on a narrow lane that leads up to jameson distillery
think crash happened here http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2446327
for those who don't know the smithfield stop is just to the left of the marker under the trees and in the shadow od the building to the south

bumber of the taxi was dragged along under the luas

not usre why we need all that detail but i thought I'd share

If there were no legal impediments, the RPA should release the front facing camera footage of the crash to the new agencies. It would show that the Luas wasn't at fault and also show the damage done to your car if you think red lights are optional. Nothing like a bit of persuasive PR like this.

There wouldn't really be a problem releasing the video after any legal cases pending are sorted.

There is a shocking trend toward stupid behavour on our roads, far too many tram vs car/pedestrian incidents and far too many close calls. Then you have the regular bridge strikes and level crossing issues on the main rail network

The video would be nice, but without a jail sentence its just entertainment. Jail time is a message people understand

There's some serious looking accidents in there, I wonder have any of our Luas accidents been at any great speed at all?
