Red line Luas services disrupted

Services on the Luas red line remain disrupted because of the affects of a fire in buildings close to the route in the city centre yesterday.

As a result trams are only operating between Tallaght and Blackhorse Avenue. The green line Luas is operating as normal.

The company that operates the Luas said this morning there would be no service between Blackhorse Avenue and the city until further notice.

A limited Luas bus service is in operation serving Blackhorse, Goldenbridge, Drimnagh, Suir Road, Abbey, Busaras and Connolly and the city centre.

The following stops: Fatima, Rialto, James, Heuston, Museum, Smithfield, Four Courts, will not be served.

Valid Luas tickets will be accepted by Dublin Bus for the duration of the disruption.

It is unclear if there will be Luas Red Line services between Blackhorse and The Point on bank holiday Monday. Keep an eye on http://www.luas.ie/travel-updates for details.

It is the end of terrace building, with the red brick front here: http://maps.google.ie/maps?q=Benburb...52.04,,0,-6.68 that is the problem. During / after the fire part of the roof collapsed, forcing our the gable wall. There is also signs of a 'belly' in the front wall (now not supported by the gable wall), which if there was further subsidence, would risk falling out onto the street.

The adjacent buildings are showing their age, so the risk is that there would be a sympathetic collapse of several buildings. Structural steel was being fitted on Sunday afternoon to stabilise the building. Depending on the exact condition of the building and how work proceeds, Luas should be open on Tuesday, but Monday is less certain.

So sanity has returned to Veolia, and they will run the service to/from Heuston. Which begs the question, why wasn't it done beforehand?

Its messy as hell

Tram arrives into Heuston goes out onto the bridge, reverses into the centre platform and then goes back out onto the bridge and then finally goes in the right direction

5 minute job max.

Since the disruption began, there's been more seats than passengers on the Luas at all times. They can't allow that situation to continue for much longer. Running the service to/from Heuston will get double the current amount of passengers, and at least ease the financial hit a bit.

From what I recall of the RPA's presentation to Engineers Ireland, the trams could have escaped to Line BX and thereby either Sandyford or Broombridge depots but would not have been able to loop back onto C/C1.

Luas Red Line Service Information
Wednesday March 21st 2012

Please note the Red Line is operating on Wednesday March 21st between Tallaght/ Saggart Stops and Heuston Stop only.

There is no service from Heuston to the city centre.

The frequency has changed also, 7 - 10 minutes in the peak. 15 minutes off peak.

Luas passengers are therefore advised to leave extra time to travel.

Luas tickets are valid on Dublin Bus for the duration of this disruption.

This service disruption is due to a fire in the city centre last Saturday morning March 17th on Benburb Street.

Luas has been requested by Dublin City Council to turn off the power to the overhead lines in the affected area as buildings in the immediate vicinity of the track need to be protected and / or demolished and a safety cordon is in operation. See picture.

The reason why Luas is unable to operate a city service outside of the cordon e.g. Smithfield Stop to The Point Stop is because the Smithfield Stop is in the area where the power lines are turned off. The area of power that is de-energised is from the Aisling Hotel, just past Heuston Stop, to The Four Courts Stop. Hence it is not possible to operate Smithfield to The Point.

Dublin City Council, Buildings Department confirmed work had commenced on the site and a progress meeting will be held at 4pm on Wednesday March 21st. Following this meeting Luas will update passengers on the service for the rest of the week.

We hope to restore full Luas Red Line services as soon as it is possible and when safe to do so.

Luas Red Line Service Information
Wednesday March 21st and Thursday March 22nd 2012

Dublin City Council today told Luas about the extent and consequences of the structural damage caused to the fire damaged buildings adjacent to the Red Line Luas tracks on Benburb Street, Dublin 7.

DCC's Consultant Structural Engineer has confirmed that the buildings are unstable and it is now not possible to secure the buildings as they had planned.

Furthermore DCC informed Luas that it will be Friday 23rd March or indeed Monday March 26th before Luas can resume a full Red Line service.

Another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday March 22nd at 3pm, after which a further update will be published.

For work continue safely on the properties the overhead power lines are turned off and a safety cordon is in place on Benburb Street.
