No Train Service South of Wicklow
Train services have been replaced by buses south of Wicklow today (December 6) and the same will prevail for part of tomorrow. This is not listed as a Travel Alert on IE's website; potential travelers will only discover that they are going to be conveyed by bus for part of their journey if they use the website's journey planner. I was informed at Wicklow this afternoon that this truncation of service is due to engineering works; my informant did not elaborate as to their nature or explain why this has happened without (so far as I know) advance notice.

Irish Rail obviously had no intention of telling anyone. Quite simply not on. |

For the record, both of the afternoon services left Wicklow c. 25 minutes late as they had to await buses arriving from points south. As both of these trains go forward to Maynooth, I would imagine that passengers heading from City Centre stations towards Maynooth on either of these services were seriously delayed.
My informant at Wicklow suggested that the engineering works were related the closure and associated diversionary road works at an unmanned crossing near Rathdrum but he was not sure of the details. It certainly seems unusual even by IE's standards, that a large portion of an intercity route has been closed, apparently without notice or, it seems, explanation. |
