Default Malahide Viaduct reopens Monday 16th November

by Corporate Communications

http://www.irishrail.ie/news_centre/...ew&news_id=559

Quote:
Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that the Malahide Viaduct is set to reopen this Monday coming, 16th November.

From that date, full Northern Commuter and Belfast Enterprise services will be restored to customers along the route.

Major physical works have now been completed, and test trains will operate on the route up to and including Sunday, ahead of the first passenger service, the 05.40 Dundalk to Pearse service on Monday. The reopening of the line follows almost three months of disruption to services, due to the Viaduct accident on Friday 21st August.

The accident was caused by erosion of the weir at sea-bed level, which caused the support to one pier to be undermined. Iarnród Éireann’s investigation into the accident is continuing, and will be concluded early in the New Year.

Works to restore the viaduct have included:

- reconstruction of the weir, and scour protection measures

- reinstatement of the collapsed pier, including piling to bedrock to strengthen support

- strengthening of all other piers on the viaduct, including piling to strengthen support

- reinstatement of track and other railway infrastructure

The design and completed works have been independently reviewed by advisers to Iarnród Éireann, Roughan & O’Donovan Structural Engineers; and reviewed by the Railway Safety Commission, who will review final details this Friday, to allow for approval to permit the line to be reopened to trains from Monday.

Service resumption

A full timetable of Northern Commuter services and Belfast Enterprise services will be restored from Monday 16th November.

From that date, with the full resumption of rail services, replacement bus services provided for Iarnród Éireann customers will no longer operate (e.g direct buses from Drogheda & Balbriggan, school and other shuttles between Donabate and Malahide).

The strengthened bus services on routes 33x and 33d will be scaled back from Monday 16th November with some services being retained for a short period only to facilitate customers with pre-paid bus tickets.

Rail tickets will no longer be valid on Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann services on the Northern line corridor.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for the disruption caused since 21st August to services on this crucial route. We very much appreciate the patience, understanding and co-operation of customers during this time, particularly with regard to the alternative services provided. We look forward to welcoming all customers back to our services from Monday onwards, on passenger services, and the restoration of freight services from Tara Mines.

In addition, Iarnród Éireann is grateful to Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and contracted private bus operators for their assistance in providing strong alternatives during this time, and our own station staff for the assistance provided to customers, as well as the assistance of road hauliers in the transfer of freight traffic. We welcome the safe and timely completion of the reconstruction of the viaduct by our project team and their contractors.

Customers should note that, as is normal with all new track infrastructure, there will initially be a speed restriction on trains across the viaduct. This restriction will be at 25mph for a minimum of two weeks, and raised to 50mph for a further minimum of two weeks, following which line speeds will be increased to the normal levels of 90mph. This is standard practice, and these restrictions will not impact on the reliability of services.

Love to see how a train can travel at 90mph over the viaduct, might be allowed but it hasn't happened in at least a decade.

Static and dynamic tests commence today Thursday. Should be seeing a very long Tara Mines train placed on the viaduct to test for deflection under load, equally should see a Tara Mines train pass over a 50mph as well

The normal timetable will operate in full from today onwards.

Please note.

The 2009 timetable does not apply.

The 2010 timetable does not apply.

The "during the disruption" timetable does not apply.

Some fuzzy "after the disruption" timetable does apply. Expect some trains to run a bit late, or a lot early, or to Bray (while heading northbound through Rush & Lusk).

In other words, everything is back to normal.
