Default Rail usage 2017

https://www.nationaltransport.ie/new...port-services/

The statistics released by National Transport authority confirm the demand for rail with 45M journeys in the past year. This is happening despite all the limitations. Phoenix Park tunnel has been a huge boost and this lay closed to passenger use for years and Irish Rail had to be almost dragged into opening the route. There are other developments that would provide flexibility in Dublin also if some changes were made such as the Glasnevin junction or the Croke Park station open up. Likewise the Navan link should be invested in along with a spur to the airport. Invest in rail and allow people to commute other than by car.

Default Commuting

Open the Navan rail line as an example the demand is there for rail and it’s too expensive to own a house in Dublin. Over 45m journeys last year let the politicians come up with solutions that are achievable like improving rail infrastructure and improving how people live.

Yes, but the root of the problem is restrictive planning, zoning and infrastructure within 20lm of Dublin city centre which has strangled housing supply and lead to such a huge price differential between Dublin and places 50km or more away. Better address the causes of the problem (planning and investment failures in greater Dublin) rather than promoting more individually stressful and socially wasteful commutes.

I think it’s a mix of both many ppl don’t want to live the city life but prefer the small town where there is more community connection to schools etc. for these commute is an option but not by car. Navan is an example of a town that is in striking distance of Dub but retains the town character. There is rail infrastructure in place and already a line half finished nearby so with some political will, local activism and new thinking the rail option is achievable.

I think that's what people from a small town or rural background believe, but trust me, if you find yourself in a situation where you leave for work at 7am and arrive back at 7:30pm, there won't be much community interaction.

Navan Line was discussed to death 10 and more years ago here. There is a spur which can be used into Connolly, but to be realistic you are waiting for the DART expansion and perhaps a railcar shuttle to/from that expansion.

Navan via Dunboyne is not a runner if it ever was then the Motorway has canned it. The idea of development now is for it to be much closer to the city than regional towns such as Navan. If you believe that there will ever be any planned development.
