[March 2012] Luas Red Line - Service has resumed

Luas Red Line Service Information
Wednesday March 21st and Thursday March 22nd 2012

Dublin City Council (DCC) today told Luas about the extent and consequences of the structural damage caused to the fire damaged buildings adjacent to the Red Line Luas tracks on Benburb Street, Dublin 7.

DCC's Consultant Structural Engineer has confirmed that the buildings are unstable and it is now not possible to secure the buildings as they had planned.

Furthermore DCC informed Luas that it will be Friday 23rd March or indeed Monday March 26th before Luas can resume a full Red Line service.

Another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday March 22nd at 3pm, after which a further update will be published.

For work to continue safely on the properties the overhead power lines are turned off and a safety cordon is in place on Benburb Street.


This means the Luas service is only able to operate as follows:

Red Line Service:

Tallaght/ Saggart Stops to Heuston Stop only. There is no tram service from Heuston to the City Centre.

* Luas tickets are valid on Dublin Bus for the duration of this service disruption.

*Please note that Dublin Bus have increased services on routes 90 and 145.

Some buses on these routes are travelling a route that is not their normal timetable and/ or route in order to pick up /drop off Luas passengers. They are doing a new route to accomodate passengers travelling Connolly- Heuston direction.The points being used are Connolly Station, Custom House Quay and Tara Street Train Station. Passengers note the Custom House Quay stop is only in use till 7pm. Please use Aaron Quay post 7pm.

Luas passengers are therefore advised to leave extra time to travel.

Shuttle Service From Heuston

Dublin Bus wishes to advise customers that a shuttle service will operate between Heuston Station and Custom House Quay while work is being carried out on the Luas Red Line. The shuttle service will operate approximately every 10 minutes from 07:00hrs to 19:00hrs..

Luas tickets are valid on Dublin Bus for the duration of this disruption.

I think LUAS should consider taking an interest in any other derelict buildings along the route! Has any info come to hand about who owns that building and whether any relief could be sought against them for the disruption caused?

Therefore a normal Luas service will not resume tonight, tomorrow Friday March 23rd or Saturday March 24th, indeed it may not be back until Sunday afternoon March 25th 2012.

The next update on progress from Dublin City Council is 2pm Saturday March 24th. Luas will update everyone post this meeting.

For the council to work safely and to ensure the general public’s safety the overhead power lines are turned off and a safety cordon is in place.

The Number 1 priority of any rail network anywhere in the world is to provide affordable, frequent, fast, and convenient transport for passengers. If it's not doing that, people will use other forms of transport to get around. There is risk to everything, and if safety was the priority, then the safest way is to not operate the service at all, then there's no risk, no cost, and no harm done.

I said it before it was constructed, this thing should have been put underground, especially in the city centre, so the number of incidents and disruptions would be all but eliminated, and you could get from one end of the city to the other in half the time it takes the Luas to now.

It could be a number of weeks at least before the service is fully resumed. From those photos and it's proximity to the line, that looks a long finger job to me. That's a lot of income lost, which will probably be cited as another excuse to justify next January's fare increase.

RED LINE – FULL SERVICE HAS RESUMED SATURDAY MARCH 24 2012

A full Luas Red Line service has resumed operation this afternoon ( 4pm) Saturday March 24th 2012.

A full Red Line service is: Tallaght / Saggart Stops to Connolly/ The Point Stop.

Luas would like to thank all customers for their patience and co-operation during the recent Red Line service disruption.

We are truly delighted to run a full line service again.

Dublin City Council’s, Buildings Department, informed Luas this afternoon, Saturday March 24th that they had progressed works on the fire damaged buildings on Benburb Street to a point where the overhead power lines could be turned back on, permitting the trams to travel safely.

I don't think a system losing money (as LUAS is now) can afford that kind of gesture not least when it wasn't their property which caused the disruption.

Full Luas red line services resume

A full Luas red line service has resumed operation in Dublin following the completion of repair work on fire-damaged buildings.

The city centre service had been suspended for several days while Dublin City Council carried out work on buildings adjacent to the tracks on Benburb Street.

Veolia Transport, which runs the Luas service, said trams were now travelling onwards from the Heuston stop to the city centre serving Connolly and The Point stops.

"Dublin City Council’s buildings department informed Luas this afternoon, that they had progressed works on the fire damaged buildings on Benburb Street to a point where the overhead power lines could be turned back on, permitting the trams to travel safely," it said.

It's a goodwill gesture, not a money-making exercise. And the passenger numbers are lower on Saturdays anyway. The passengers who had to find lifts, buses, taxis etc over the past week in place of the Luas have earned some form of gratitude for their patience and perseverance.

Again, if it was LUAS's fault - faulty overhead or track - I'd absolutely agree with you. However, LUAS was prevented from operating a service by the local authority. If DCC want to make a payment to LUAS in restitution, by all means operate free service.
