I bet 3rd track from Cherryville-Kildare (about 2 miles plus changes to the points and signals?) would save more time than +10mph on bits of Athy-Cherryville? Not grandiose enough for the Tiger era and too much for the Troika era I suppose...

The replaced and moved the points at the junction quiet recently. Don't have a date but its around 2 years ago and once that was done they decreased the speed even further to 20 mph.

At Cherryville the Waterford line curves left as it leaves the main line which curves right. The main line is canted to cater for 90mph, and if the Waterford line were to be high speed it would have to be canted in the opposite direction. Whatever about the radius of curves invloved the reverse in the vertical profile is surely a limiting factor.

We not talking about high speed but it should be able to manage around 40mph not the current 20. Before they moved the points and when the 22000 started the line it was around 40 mph and then it was reduced to 25 mph and then further to 20.

There is a maximum horizontal rate of change, trains are very sensitive to this as little as 4mm can be enough to exceed engineering limits
The crossover was moved towards Kildare to put it on a straight section
