16:05 Malahide Bray
None of the electronic displays working
No destination shown on front
No pa

19:30 Bray Howth
Everything seemed fine until the pa started to give the Tara Street change here for the 90 bus routine outside Blackrock, it then went on to announce Blackrock correctly then the whole system died and out of service came up
Of course the destination on the rear siad out of service
Again Irish Rail have agreed that the destinations should be correct though out on the ground the situation remains poor

7:35 Portarlington - Heuston (05.30hrs from Cork)
Arrived at 8.00am no announcement that I heard in station, driver said it was due to 'speed restrictions en route'

Its the new policy of hide the truth but not to lie

I got the same spin http://forum.platform11.org/showthread.php?t=961

Yes the train was delayed by a speed restriction, that much is true
The cause was most likely a sheared bolt in the suspension on the train which resulted in the speed restriction

Cool thanks for this info, at least it makes a bit of sense now. I'll let you know what tomorrow's excuse is!

Default shock horror

So-called 07.35 half an hour late. Again. I know there are ballybrophy works etc but this seems a convenient excuse as it's always late all year round.

No announcement made at station this morning. Losing the last of my patience fast as I nearly get blown away in gale force winds waiting for a train that is always late! If they just bloody announce it I could go back to nice warm car (or house) for the extra half an hour.

2 excuses today. The on-train excuse was "due to leaving limerick late" or something to that effect and in-station excuse at heuston was "due to not getting line clearance" or something to that effect. Can someone invent a smiley with a shotgun so i can insert it here?

Default 29-11-06 20:12 Southbound from Tara

This train was for greystones, but the next station was "Sutton" all the way from Tara to Blackrock and robodude wasn't announcing stations.

Could it be because the front 2 carriages were 80's Dart?

Software can cope with that, it just scrolls the stations but the PA only says this train is for X it doesn't make the next station PA when the leading coach is not fitted with the equipment since the driver can't turn it off if it goes wrong

Its actually a rather sensible compromise apart from the volume in the front two coaches is normally too low you would expect that it wouldn't work at all

Default Off-train information

On the way home yesterday I saw a novel announcement on the platform display in GCD.

Something along the lines of "The second last carriage on the next train is out of service. IE apologise for any onconvenience" I think it was a Drogheda train, but it wasn't a DART anyway.

On the plus side they announced it so you didn't have people lining up in their usual places to find a broken carriage in front of them and they also didn't cancel the entire train because of one faulty carriage.

On the minus side, my DART was telling me that it was destined for Howth (which it wasn't) and that the next station was Shankill (which it wasn't). I can never remember carriage numbers unfortunately.

14:15 Heuston Newbridge
Destination display front and rear said Kildare
PIS on but had Kildare instead of Newbridge
PA volume too low
No maps

16:10 Heuston Kildare
Destination display front and rear blank
No PIS
No manual PA for Newbridge stop
No maps

19:30 Bray Howth
PIS on but scrolled next station Shankill the whole way
Maps stayed lit as if train was still in Bray
PA worked fine though

The 5.30 Hueston to Limerick train does not announce the stations it services either and is usually overcrowded. the trains are always dirty with disgusting toilet facilities that rarely seem to be cleaned.. The 40 minute journey to Monasterevin usually takes an hour.

Monasterevin has a stupid excuse of a service. There seem to be only five trains stopping here every day; three morning trains from Portlaoise (07.07, 07.34 and 08.00 )and two trains from Hueston (5.30 and 6.30)in the evening. This service was supposed to be improving yet the opposite is the case as the evening services will actually be worse than the existing one. The 5.30 Limerick train has Kildare and Monasterevin as it's first two stops and it is usually packed with limited standing room. The new train service will the 5.10 Hueston to Portlaoise train which services Newbridge, Kildare and after the 14/01/07 Monasterevin.

So we are going from bad to horrendous!
Does anybody have any more information on this mess?

Deirdre

Sorry Deirdre, don't have any more info -- apart from the fact that all the above seems indicative of the fact that we don't seem able to differentiate between commuter and intercity services in this country, which leaves both sets of passengers pissed off (intercity because their services seem to stop everywhere, with the result that it's quicker to take the car, commuter because there aren't enough services and the ones that do exist are overcrowded)

Anyway, just wanted to say welcome to the message board

Welcome to the board Deirdre, and the first part of your post about the 5.30 is totally correct, however, it should be a little bit better soon with new(er) carraiges (well, 20 years old) on that service, which I also get from time to time.

This issue of Monasterevin has been addressed before see here:

http://forum.platform11.org/showthread.php?t=758

please give an old thread a new lease of life.

There is a rail users group starting in Monestervin, we have our own timetable worked out which delivers a much improved service

One of the mid 1980's era trains with automatic doors will become available next Monday (still the best coaches in service) so things should get better, all Limerick trains will be operated by modern coaches as of January and there will be a 10-15% increase in seats and slight journey time reductions

Had an odd one on the 16:45 (or there abouts) Pearse to Drogheda.

The PIS all worked fine, except coming into Drogheda it developed an odd stutter I've never heard before. Something like...

"Please take all bel-b-b-belongings when leaving the train."

Anyone heard that before?
