Saturday Train
Does anyone know why there is no 22.22 ex Pearse heading Northbound on a Saturday night?
The fact that the 23.20 ex Connolly is the latest is bad enough but it would seem overall that IE do not want people to use the train to get home after a few drinks in town. This leaves a gap of two hours with no service on what should be one of the busiest times for public transport. |

Ah where do I begin?
In simple terms, IE will claim lack of demand, without actually backing it up. It went on for years in Kildare re Sunday trains. As for the non-existant 22.22northbound on a saturday night, I'd say its a rostering issue. Someone somewhere doesn't want to work sat night and management say ok because it suits them. Im open to correction. At this point in the countries development, I believe we have reached a stage now whereby late rail commuter services on selected lines should be introduced at weekends without delay. There is no excuse. This initiative would also push the issue of transport police which are urgently needed in parts of Ireland. DB and BE have done it and local operators are doing it nationwide. |

I think part of the problem is that Bus Eireann, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail all come under the CIE banner and therefore feel that they don't need to compete with each other.
Living in Donabate, there is one night link on a Friday and Saturday, leaving at 1.30. It takes approximately 80 minutes to get out there, after going through Santry, the airport, St. Margarets, Swords Manor. It would seem that Irish Rail cite lack of demand for services and justify that because people don't turn up for them. Of course they don't if they don't exist. Even when they ran a special train after Robbie Williams, they didn't advertise it! My partner went to the concert and took a taxi home, unaware of the extra trains. If anyone has been on the 2320 ex Connolly on a Saturday night and seen the people sprinting to get onto the crowded train, they would know that that is not the case. The passenger patterns are dictated by their services. NOT by passenger demand. |
