![]() Great passenger information on last Friday's 17.05 to Sligo.
First, as I approached the platform, I stopped dead thinking I had the wrong train, as the display at the back read 'Shankill'. It changed to Sligeach a few seconds later. On board, and the scrolling displays had the same problem. Sligeach was OK, but Sligo had become Shankill. They were also interspersed for good measure with what seemed to be mp3 filenames. Had quite an amusing journey. All the way along, the Irish name for the next station was correct, but the English name appeared to be whatever was alphabetically nearest from a list of totally irrelevant stations. Longford became Lisburn, Dromod was Dun Laoghaire. The best bit was just after Dromod, where the display was presumably attempting to list the remaining stations we were due to call at: - Cherry Orchard - Ballymote - Belfast - Castleknock - Shankill A couple of stations were announced by the driver, but not all. And while many of the Irish names are close enough to the English for tourists to make a guess, God help anyone looking for Carrick-on-Shannon. It would take a fair leap of intuition to realise the Cora Droma Ruisc/Cherry Orchard means you should get off next stop! |
