Wheelchair designated areas

This afternoon I took a commuter train from Connolly to Maynooth. As with the previous two days, I had my bike with me as I was travelling off peak. On Monday and Tuesday I placed the bike (not a folding bike) next to the door areas, taking care not to block egress or ingress in as much as this is possible.

This afternoon I placed the bike in a wheelchair designated space. I was as watchful as before and noted if anyone using a wheelchair was intending to get on at each station. I'm not entirely happy with that situation but it was better than the two previous days.

Has IE ever considered redesignating some space for bikes on their commuter trains?

There's not a lot of room on many of the services as things stand...

On 2800s and 29000s, are there two spaces like on the DART?

Any time the train is busy, it doesn't make sense for bikes to displace people.

It would be ideal if there was some way to restrain bikes and other large objects. I think such restraints are fitted to 2600s, 2700s and 3000s.

On sets with intermediate dead ends, i.e. driver cabs that aren't in use, it can make sense to be immediately behind the cabs, such that the bike isn't in anyone's way and can't really go flying in an emergency.

DC, did you use the bike at both ends of your trip or was it primarily one end? So rent-a-bike could have worked if available at one end or secure storage at the other?
