Default no lights

0730 dart from Greystones this morning - no lights at all. Nice and dark going through the tunnels, and a nostalgic reminder of old cravens that regularly suffered from this problem (minus the boiling steam that used to emerge from the seats and burn your arse).

seriously though - surely this is a safety issue - what if the Dart had to stop in a tunnel? It was a newish train as well (one of the japanese Darts with the cramped seats).

Now in the good old days before Greystones was added to the DART it was fairly normal for trains to operate with the lights switched off on a summers afternoon, that was totally fine but Greystones is no fun without lights

If the lights where off in 2 coaches possibly an electrical fault otherwise if all the entire train was in the dark it was the driver who didn't turn them on, if the train loses its secondary power circuit the lights will switch to battery automatically.

Odds on driver took the train from the shed in Bray and didn't switch the lights on, last train I heard of this happening to also started from Greystones early in the morning

And yes it is a safety issue

Did someone ask the driver to turn the lights on in Bray, the Dalkey tunnel isn't fun in the dark either.

yup was also on that train this morning. the lights were out all the way to my stop at booterstown! crazyness so it was. realised they were switched off when i got on and they weren't on throughout the entire train so i presumed it must have been an electrics fault, obviously as mark described though it was failure of the driver to realise he'd not switched them on. I'm just surprised that there's no warning for the driver to indicate the carriages lights are not on.

There isn't a indicator light normally.

On the original DART coaches, the light switch as far as I know is in the fuse box. Which is behind the second mans seat

Now if there was a fault in the system there would be a fault light on the main console.

Only works is the main lights where switched on in the first place

Surely in this day and age, there should be a photocell in each coach. If it detects darkness and the lights are off it should be able to override them or at least provide emergency lighting.

What if you want the lights off? Given the human can manage to insert a key and push several other critical buttons its not too much to assume the light switch will be pushed

In the event of an accident the emergency lights should come on of there own accord
