New Timetable - Changes in the Cork Area
The new timetable sees major cutbacks on commuter services to Mallow. Perhaps that's no great surprise considering Mallow is well served by InterCity traffic and there's no sign of the new stations at Blarney and Kilbarry opening any time soon; there's little point in running a railcar just between Cork and Mallow.
Midleton is largely unchanged, although there are some changes to the Sunday timetable that make it more clockface. Cobh sees extra services on a weekday and a Sunday, but fewer on a Saturday. It will no longer be possible to travel direct from Mallow to Cobh as all services will now require a change in Cork. A minor quibble would be that the scrapping of the 18:55 Cork-Mallow means early-evening passengers to Killarney are faced with a long layover in Mallow. Also, by moving the 08:25 Cobh-Cork to 08:30, it gets into Cork a bit on the late side for those with 9am start. Anyway, these are the changes from the Cork end, with corresponding changes to the return trains Cork-Midleton (Weekday) No Change Cork-Midleton (Saturday) No Change Cork-Midleton (Sunday) 14:00 -> 14:15 18:30 -> 18:15 Cork-Cobh (Weekday) 05:20 -> 05:30 07:55 -> 08:00 19:00 New Service 19:30 New Service Cork-Cobh (Saturday) 05:20 Scrapped 06:30 -> 06:00 07:30 Scrapped 07:55 -> 08:00 09:00 Scrapped Cork-Cobh (Sunday) 08:00 New Service 08:45 -> 09:00 11:00 New Service 11:45 -> 12:00 14:15 -> 14:30 15:30 -> 16:00 16:55 -> 17:00 18:15 -> 18:30 20:00 New Service 20:40 -> 21:00 21:50 -> 22:00 Cork-Mallow (Weekday) 06:15 -> 06:20 06:45 Scrapped 08:50 -> 09:00 10:00 Scrapped 12:00 Scrapped 14:00 Scrapped 16:00 Scrapped 17:55 -> 18:00 18:55 Scrapped 21:00 New Service 22:20 -> 21:50 Cork-Mallow (Saturday) 06:15 Scrapped 06:45 Scrapped 08:50 -> 09:00 10:00 Scrapped 12:00 Scrapped 14:00 Scrapped 16:00 Scrapped 17:55 -> 18:00 18:55 Scrapped 21:00 New Service 22:20 -> 21:50 Cork-Mallow (Sunday) 14:05 Scrapped 14:50 Scrapped 18:50 New Service |

Personally, I think the whole idea of stations on the mainline at Blarney and Kilbarry are a BIG mistake, unless platforms can be created on 'passing-loops', as there is a need to maximise Intercity speeds on a section of line such as this, and the creation of commuter stops would only slow everything down. Far better if Blarney was served by a reopened 'Blarney/Muskerry Tramway' which could link right through to the city centre, along with a potentil route from Ballincollig and another one from Bandon; these could link through to the Cobh and Midleton Routes which could be electrified, so you would have a true cross-city Light Rail Network: Look at Manchester, where you have a Light Rail on such lines, with former heavy rail routes such as the Bury and Altricham commuter routes converted for trams which also run on new routes through the city centre. A Light Rail solution is the only sensible long-term one for Cork, but will have to wait for improvements in economic conditions. In the meantime, it would indeed be sensible to reopen stations on the existing Cork routes at the following locations: Blackpool for the Shopping centre, Silver Springs/Tivoli, and Dunkettle, with space for a Park and Ride.
