Oranmore Fares
Quite rightly the fare from Galway to Oranmore has been criticised
A discounted day return fare is now offered at 6 euro. This is a temporary measure till end 2013 As typical there is nothing on Irish Rail's site to confirm that this offer exists Fares http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_in...&stage1=Submit

That's pretty bad - I thought a journey I take occasionally from Longford to Edgeworthtown was bad at the same price for 13km. Fares for short hops between towns in rural areas are absurd to the point of being prohibitive or making people chance their arm and dodging. You end up paying close to a tenner for 10 minutes each way on the train.
That Oranmore one-way fare can't be that much less than a taxi. |

Irish Rail is making no progress on the agreed fare matrix changes, it wouldn't make a huge difference in this case but it would in general reduce fares in many short/medium distance categories
So for example Dublin Thurles falls from a L to J http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_in...1=Submit+Query Dublin Newbridge falls from a D to C http://www.railusers.ie/passenger_in...1=Submit+Query Needless to say to took us only a matter of an hour or so to write and test the code for the new distance bands and we can switch over fully in a matter of seconds. Irish Rail wants a new ticket machine...

In fairness the Almex ticket office machines are surely at least five years past expected lifetime. A new system is sorely needed.

Current system just replicates the Almex machines.
Irish Rail could switch to the new distance bands today but seem to want to hold out for a new machine. Sure new machine would be nice but its not an excuse for not implementing these changes.

They advertised the fare online for a few days.
They also launched this yesterday for the failed railway corridor. http://www.irishrail.ie/cat_news.jsp?i=4882&p=116&n=237 |
