Default [28-2-2008] Ballina - Manulla Junction

There was a train vs car incident this morning about 11am at a user worked crossing

Probably the 10:50 Ballina - Manualla Junction train

Services obviously impacted by nothing on the Irish Rail site

A man has been killed in an accident at railway level crossing in Co Mayo.

He was the driver of a car which was struck by a train on the outskirts of Straid at around 11am.

The incident occurred on the Ballina to Dublin line where it intersects a minor road. The crossing has gates which are opened and closed by motorists.

Iarnród Éireann says an investigation into the accident is under way.

An investigation has begun into the incident.

Just dawned on me but its rather pointless running the bus to Manulla Junction since it has no road or pedestrian access

Bus in fact is going to Castlebar or Claremorris

Is there any great drawback in adding road access to Manulla? Normally I have no time for halts in the middle of nowhere and with low prospect of urban development (Woodlawn, Attymon) but given the Ballina line seems set for long term usage rather than closure and therefore you're not adding "extra" stops to the system maybe it's time to consider a small car park and access road .

As this overhead shows, the N60 is a very short distance away and there is a sideroad adjacent to the station - the latter might need to be widened but surely that wouldn't cost the earth unless this bridge had to be dealt with on safety grounds. In any case, Mayo CC should bear the road cost if not the carpark cost rather than IE since it is an infrastructure improvement which benefits local road users.

Bustitution would therefore only need to be to Manulla rather than Claremorris which is 15km further by road if the bus goes through Kiltimagh.

Despite disappearing off the site the bus continued a new notice has appeared, note the bus doesn't go to Manulla Junction it goes somewhere else as I posted previous

Bus transfers will operate from Ballina to Ballyhaunis for Dublin-bound services, and from Claremorris to Ballina for westbound services.

Railcar set travelled back to Ballina yesterday so normal services should have resumed today

No notice on the IE site to confirm normal services resumed
