I'm guessing that the main reason for doing this is because they have a poor record of a lot of journeys on open returns, commuter passes and free travel passes.

Interesting (to me) that the 17:05 to Sligo is the heaviest loading on the evening InterCity service and that the heaviest overall is a poor-relation Rosslare service although that gets a bonus by being the through train.
