The Defence Forces has said that a suspicious device found beside the railway line in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin was a viable bomb.

However, the Defence Forces said it was not part of any attack and had been stored near a pedestrian bridge for later use.

The device, which is believed to have been a pipe bomb, was removed from the scene by an army bomb disposal unit.

It is believed that the device was made by criminals rather than subversives. It has been wrapped in a duffle bag.

The alert had disrupted rail services between Dún Laoghaire and Dublin city centre for several hours.

A number of roads were also closed but have since re-opened.
