Where else is standard gauge used?

Were/ are there not differences between French and English gauges? I remember reading an article on European gauges. I found it facinating that the Spanish at one point had a different gauge to the French as they were fearful of a French invasion using their rail network. Apparently, the French then designed some rolling stock that could run on both.

All a bit hazy now but I'm sure some of ye know more about it..
