I think he's just shocked that he actually got a seat, and doesn't want to give it up in case he never gets one again...

Usually I find that the 20 minutes extra time that Irish Rail put on to every evening train on the Sligo line is plenty enough for me. I hadn't realised they were doing this deliberately because the train was so comfortable.
