Oh my goodness! A special from Birdhill! I really cant believe it....
|
Pity there's none from Cahir, Clonmel etc. There have been GAA specials from there before. But I guess now it means paying overtime to level crossing operators etc.

A Nenagh branch direct service? For realz?
|
I doubt many people will use the special from Nenagh. A really uncomfortable 2700 DMU i imagine will be used. Would be surprised if it even makes it as far as Portlaoise. I was in Colbert last week waiting for the 18:00 to Limerick Junction connection and before the opened the door for us, they opened it for the Limerick-Ballybrophy passengers and only three people got on it.

Ooops, merged.
|
does the Minister want to go to the match with his constituents, perhaps...?
|
Alan Kelly words didn't sound really positive in terms of securing much needed funding for the line. To be fair to Iarnród Éireann it has introduced services and laid parts of new track along the line. The real problem is it will never be as fast as the Bus and motorway or as cheap, and i doubt any more improvements will be a high priority than other projects. Without people in Nenagh using it though they will just have probably pumped money into a black hole.

You can bet the extra costs incurred by opening early next Sunday will magically be used later as an excuse to close when the accounts are shown,
|
An extra Waterford - Heuston service has being re added to booking system,
9.30 Waterford - Heuston 11.40 (serves Thomastown, Kilkenny & Muine Beag). |

good to see the minister took the train himself - i hear that he was spotted on the cobh cork line a few weeks back as well |
They avoided the level crossing costs as well, the ICR was moved to Birdhill on Saturday evening after the 16:45 to Ballybrophy. The vast majority of level crossings are on the Birdhill Limerick stretch.
Its 30 mph for 30 miles from Nenagh - hardly going to send the passengers yesterday home with a desire to use the service for non GAA use |
I wouldn't call a phobia about changing trains in Ireland misplaced. Whatever your chances are of arriving at your destination in an reasonable timeframe when using one train, you can forget about it if there is a second train involved.
Plus Irish Rail will usually manage to leave you standing on a freezing platform in driving rain in the middle of nowhere with no idea of when they are going to rescue you. Then for a laugh the train will pull into a different platform with the destination showing as "Ulan Bator" and promptly burst into flames. After about three hours, the announcer will apologise for operational difficulties in a language that sounds vaguely like Klingon. |
One of the most miserable train changing experiences I recall is Limerick-Ballybrophy-Heuston circa 1995. Brrrrrrrr.

No real Limerick trains that could be re-routed tbh cause they are majority Limerick junction shuttle services.
Only 4 direct services a day Mon-Sat. Thurles to Limerick commuter by crappy 2700 at 07:35 Dublin-Limerick 15:25 Dublin-Limerick 16:25 Dublin-Limerick 17:25 At least one direct service by Nenagh though would be great too but i doubt Iarnród Éireann would bother introducing it. Plus the times and length of journey would scare people off. Also they might have to value the fare as the same rate as the Dublin-Cork line's Limerick service, which would be unfair given the less distance that train would travel. Though they should just take the Limerick part out of it. Just Nenagh/Roscrea to Dublin using a 3 car 22000 class could work. |
