kildare to galway & return comparison

Living in Kilcock and going to Galway by train I always drove to Kildare to pick up the relevant train.
Up until 2006 I could get the train at Kildare for Galway at 1129 and arrive 1350. Journey time 2H21.
I would return on either the 1525 or 1805 ex Galway. The 1525 arrived at Kildare 1739. Journey time 2H14. The 1805 arrived Kildare 2029. Journey time 2H24.
There was no change of trains en route.

To-day 2007 and next year 2008 I can not get a return train from Galway without changing in Portarlington and waiting for up to 1H51 for the connecting train!
The train departs Galway 1805 and I eventually arrive Kildare 2202. Journey time 3H57. An earlier train departs Galway 1505 and the connecting train for Kildare is at Heuston arriving Kildare 1844. Journey time 3H39.

The return journey takes up to 1H43 more to-day compared to a few years ago because no train - excluding the 0520 service - stop at Kildare.
Previously 4 of the 5 Galway to Dublin trains stopped at Kildare.
Curiously 3 of the Dublin to Galway trains now stop at Kildare?
The return journey from Galway obviously does not figure with the timetable people - I wonder why?

If Mullingar-Athlone was reopened you wouldn't even have to drive to Kildare :D:D:D

You're so right 'dm'.

Local politicians in Athlone/Moate/Mullingar have been trying to get IE reopen the Athlone - Mullingar section. The cost compared to other lines being worked on would be miniscule by comparison and a lot more cost effective.
However, I will not hold my breath!
