Cross Border Travel - Important details for non Irish/UK nationals

This doesn't come up often but has the potential to cause serious pain if you get caught out

It must be noted that the border with Northern Ireland remains a international frontier. If you are travelling into or out of Northern Ireland (or the UK) and are not a Irish or UK national you may be asked for a passport or national ID card by either the Irish Police, An Garda Siochana, the Northern Ireland Police, the PSNI, or by Irish or UK immigration staff. The border is open and there is no formal check. Strictly speaking even Irish and UK nationals should have some class of photographic id with them but there is no need for a passport. Otherwise you should have your passport with you and a visa valid to permit you entry into the UK or Ireland as applicable. More details http://www.citizensinformation.ie/ca...nd_and_the_UK/

Random checks are performed on trains and people do get thrown off and sent back
