The CCTV is excellent quality and it is downloaded as a mater of routine following all incidents.

Incident south Dun Laoghaire also

Quick question for regular travelers to Heuston, over the last while on the 4 track section (the 100 mph track) and to a lesser extent between Celbridge and Nass I find the ICR become very shaky and move a lot when doing top speed. It can become very bad in places, has anybody else noticed it?

Mark Gleeson 21-05-2012 19:03

The funny up and down oscillation? Only observed it between Kildare and Heuston.

I have been at 103mph for mile on mile elsewhere no issues

Kilocharlie 21-05-2012 19:21

Can't say I've noticed but there are some stretches that are not as smooth as others especially Sallins-Kildare. I would have expected brand new track, 4 track, to be smoother; the welded joints are noticable and they didn't have the excuse of having to rush the job during overnight works. As very disturbing motions, I only notice these going over some of the points/crossovers as speed - around Sallins and Newbridge,

Any reason why it's worse between Kildare and Heuston than elsewhere?

According to IRN 22033 is now back in passenger service and Premier class is fitted out with new leather seats and table lamps.

Is this just another waste of money by IE as 90% of the time the carrages are empty and don't see this changing anytime soon regaurdless of lamps and leather seating as I don't think passengers mind what type of chair they sit on and the lighting on the 22000 is already quiet strong.

i'll give them a spin and let you know. if they are as comfy as the new seats on the bus eireann tri-axles i'll be amazed

Thomas Ralph 03-08-2012 08:10

Some sort of complimentary onboard catering in first class might help.

Thomas J Stamp 03-08-2012 09:51

actully, i was thinking about this on the way home last night. IE are stuck with the 22k's for the next 30-40 years (not as bad as it sounds, the World Cup in Spain was 30 years ago) with maybe one major refurb along the way. Having got on a 28k from a 22k, i would suggest that when the 28's are scrapped they move the seats into ther 22's. I find the 22's seats horrible, basic, not comfortable and arse numbing.

So, they are doing up the premier-class seats. During the lifetime of the 22k I figure that BE and its competitors will replace and upgrade their intercity fleets perhaps 6 times. Already the latest tri-axles on the limerick route from BE, Kavanaghs and whoever those green buses are, are more comfortable. Yes, there is no need to re-hash the old train-v-bus stuff, I'm not a member of Bus Users Ireland, I know what I prefer. Trouble is, in getting such basic stock, IE is at a major disadvantage.

Doing up premier class is good, but they need to do up the rest of them too.

James Howard 03-08-2012 11:55

There is little point in doing up premier class by just tarting it up a bit with leather seat covers. In my mind, premier class means getting more space which means 2 + 1 seating. Anything else is just a rip off.

The 22k seats aren't terrible but they aren't as comfortable as the old green seats on the Mark 2's on the Sligo line. They are certainly better than the 29k seats. My biggest gripe comfort-wise with the 22ks is that the decor is just too bright and the lighting is too harsh. But it doesn't bother me terribly as I usually have my nose stuck in a laptop and it is actually good office lighting.

If they were to do a premier carriage with 2+1 seating, as a commuter I wouldn't mind paying a 33% surcharge on my pass for the extra space, but it would be pushing it a bit to pay any more. This is probably why they gave up on first class on the Sligo line - nobody was willing to pay for it and it used to cause a lot of agro with people getting kicked out. At one point, I used to pay the first class surcharge - it was something like £3 each way in the early 90's if I remember correctly but there was usually just myself and one or two retired major types in the half-car they used to have for first class apart from the last train on a Friday evening when it would be busy.

I think the seats on the 22k are really uncomfortable, I do be moving left to right and from right to left and using the curved head rest at the windows. I wish IE used the same sit layout as like the mark3's those seats were very comfortable you honestly wouldn't mind traveling for long journeys. The 22k seats for me I think are to high just terrible comfort. You have to push yourself right into the seat. The decor is to bright. White everywhere except the blue on the seats and floor it really is to bright. When you look at the Belfast and Cork intercity decor VS. the 22k really is basic.

Why does IE have the nicest stock on the Dublin-Cork route. Black tinted windows trains in sets of 7/8 with the catering car. Spend millions on different Intercity DMU stock for the rest of the country with terrible seating for comfort.

Jamie2k9 26-09-2012 20:29

Has anyone else noticed that on the recent ssets that entred service (22047-63) that there is a constent fairly sharp ringing, beeping sound inside the sets. I have being on most of the new sets since they started services and its on all of them. Anyone have any idea of what it could be?

because, firstly, there is a much smaller number of sets involved on those lines compaired to the 22k allocation/distribution. secondly, the 22k were ordered later from a different maker and were more in line, in my opnion, with the intention to provide a glorified commuter network.

Jamie2k9 19-10-2012 23:47

Mark have you any idea why the emergancy alarm can't be reset from the drivers cab when pressed and why does the driver have to come down and do it.

Inniskeen 20-10-2012 07:36

To ensure there is a response to the point where the alarm was raised. Obviously there is a benefit in remotely resetting, but generally this would only be appropriate if the system has been activated in error.

Jamie2k9 20-10-2012 12:18

There was a response from driver. I don't see why he needed to let it beep all the way to Waterford from Thomastwon. It gets annoying after a while when the doors into the carriage don't close. Is there not away it can be silenced and the driver comes down and resets it when it arrvies.

karlr42 20-10-2012 14:51

Driver probably didn't know how to reset it.

Mark Gleeson 20-10-2012 15:39

The system needs to be disabled at point of activation

This ensures the driver actually deals with the incident and avoids any potential issue with the driver going to the wrong place

Jamie2k9 20-11-2012 19:31

With all the problems getting SDO fitted on the ICR and routes like Rosslare not being able to operate with 6 car sets. Why can't the doors be locked in some of the coaches as would happen if there is a door fault and then you sort of have SDO. Is there some restriction in place that they can't do it?

The end door in an occupied train needs to be openable in case of emergency - having too deep a 'cul de sac' is unacceptable (that DART/commuter carriages have doors at quarter point is tolerable). This would mean locking out an entire carriage, which partially defeats the purpose of having a 6-car train.
