And it does work on the Nitelink, the sacrifices we make to test this ticket :rolleyes:

It's a shame there is no a website live for this public trial, to get transactions/balance etc. http://leapcard.ie doesn't seem to be up yet.

On the nitelnk do you have to tag on at the driver console or is the right hand side validator setup to take a nitelink fare?

Both work, odds are I was the very first non RPA/DB person to use the leap card on a nitelink. Driver was a little puzzled, so the crash course in issuing a ticket was given in 10 seconds :)

Just one minor point on the bus, the 'City Centre Fare' is available on leap, on the drivers machine, its in a second menu (square button below the main buttons, 3/4th down 'Shopper Fare')

Given they called it LEAP...

Trial seems to be going well

The secret list of pay zone agents we have is longer than the official one. There are vastly more agents than this (over 400 when fully rolled out) but these are agents which we can confirm as working today.

You don't have to in the short term. In fact, as there is limited functionality on Leap at the moment, e.g. no website to check transactions, better to keep your existing cards just for the moment.

Public roll-out should happen in the next few weeks.

leapcard.ie is now live.

I was able to setup a new account and register my leapcard.

I can now view my full travel history over the last 2 weeks since I got the card.

It also allows the public to order a new leap card.

It also allows the public to freely swap a Luas or Irish Rail card for a Leap card.

You can also order a topup for you card. Cause of how a smartcard works you have to nominate Luas or Irish Rail journey to have the credit applied. Or you can nominate a payzone agent. Easier for me to use Luas TVM as I take the bus mainly which isn't supported.

This is a really big and welcome step IMO. :)

The terminals are only updated every couple of hours, so you need to allow time for the top-up to get around the system. However, the amount of information that the buses have is limited - it seems they can only accept the information on the card, they don't get told about the top-up by the central database.

Where is that quote from, it appears to be wrong. The Short Hop Zone only extends to Balbriggan, M3 Parkway, Maynooth, Hazelhatch & Celbridge and Greystones*. Stops beyond that have no validators.

* Stictly Kilcoole, but it doesn't have validators.

What about LeapCard and Point-to_point annual tickets?

Irish Rail issued annual tickets are smart cards for all destinations now and these work the gates at Drogheda and Dundalk currently and will work the gates elsewhere in the extended GDA

It will be possible to have an annual pass for points beyond the short hop zone.

Remember LEAP is the basis of a national system

Despite the minister claiming otherwise, you can expect problems when using Dublin Bus. The RUI test group hit problems on a number of buses on Friday afternoon. Driver training in Dublin Bus is in our opinion weak and many are not confident in using the system. Its improving but it will take time.

For most bus users they will still have to board drivers side (if paying 2.10 or less), if thats you here is our 'crash course' in using leap on Dublin Bus featuring all you need to train the driver while you get your ticket.

Place card on the target on the front of the drivers ticket machine, the balance should be displayed on the 2 line display

To issue a normal fare, driver pushes same button as normal no change
To issue a city centre/shopper fare, driver pushes square button, then 3rd or 4th button down (depends on route) and from there as normal
You don't get a paper ticket if you do you have been double charged, insist on the spot the driver reverses the transaction (very limited time window to do this)

When the transaction is complete you should

See the stage name, stage number and fare deducted displayed
See a green light and a hear a beep

Remove the card at this point

Known problems

The red light is lit on the front of the machine -> It won't work you should be allowed travel for free
The display on the drivers machine is blank or unreadable -> Known issue will still work
I heard no beep -> Some of the ticket machines have the beep turned off
Driver tried and tried and all I got is a huge ticket with my history -> Either driver error or system broken

More than nine years after it was first proposed, a new integrated ticketing system for public transport in the greater Dublin area was officially launched by the Minister for Public Transport Alan Kelly today.

The Leap card allows people to use bus, Luas, Dart and rail services in the capital using one ticket. The cards can be bought at over 400 shops and newsagents or online at www.leapcard.ie.

A €5 refundable deposit is charged for an adult card and €3 for a child’s. A minimum travel credit of €5 must be placed on the card at the time of first purchase.

Travel credit works like phone credit. The card is topped-up in multiples of €5 and the cost of the fare is deducted from the balance every time a journey is made. The card can be topped-up in shops or online.

The launch of the Leap Card follows 15,000 successful test journeys by members of the public, according to Mr Kelly.

“The card will be among the cheapest ways to get around Dublin and will make public transport more attractive. We hope the card will push people towards public transport,” he said.

“We hope up to 250,000 people will use it. We will have a media campaign in the New Year. This is the future and it’s a bright future.”

Tim Gaston, a director on the project, said flexibility and convenience are the card’s greatest advantages for commuters.

He said error rates in the new system were “exceptionally low” at less than half of one per cent of journeys.

The new system will continue being developed throughout 2012 with new functionalities being added in phases. Bus Éireann and private bus operators will join the scheme in the New Year and multiple tickets such as the Rambler and Travel 90 will be added to it.

There will be a link up with the Department of Social Protection so that people entitled to free travel will receive a Leap card programmed with their details and therefore can avail of their free transport using the system.

Cards indicate how much credit is left after a journey is made. It issues a low value warning when the balance is close to zero.

Users are being advised to register their Leap cards after they buy them at www.leapcard.ie. In this way, if a card is reported lost or stolen no-one else can use it and the user is refunded the credit on the card.

The card - which has been in development for a number of years – will offer a 9 per cent saving on Dublin Bus fares after an increase in general fares comes into effect in January, up to 17 per cent off on certain Luas tickets, and between 16 and 19 per cent off on single Iarnród Éireann fares.

Integrated ticketing was first put forward in 2002 by then minister for public enterprise Mary O’Rourke. She said she wanted to see the system in place as soon as possible but conceded it could take two years.

The Railway Procurement Agency established an integrated ticketing scheme in 2003 and former minister for transport, the late Séamus Brennan, launched the first “smart card” as part of the integrated ticketing project in March 2004.

The Leap card system has cost €55 million to date.
