Hi Mark,
What do you mean he is not I.E staff

Mark Gleeson 02-10-2007 22:57

He is not a employee of Irish Rail, CIE or any subsidiary, he is employed by Rail Gourmet

Funnily enough, one of the rail gourmet guys was telling me that despite the prices, he picks up pretty nifty tips on some runs... €60 one night I think he said? Not bad on a train??

Think we just have too much money in this country...

(Also - apparantly tips aren't the only thing this guy has picked up on the train, but that's a story for another day...)

Most of the Rail Gourmet staff on the Rosslare train are new. Only one guy was there since Network Catering days. You cant miss him as he is the only one who is Irish lol.

Give credit where it is due. I'd never dream of tipping the Westport Rail Gourmet staff as they are usually useless. But the Sligo staff any time I've travelled that line are excellent and deserve the tips if they get them.

One a side note are IE staff allowed to accept a tip? I saw a passenger trying to tip a member of staff for helping with a wheelchair user but he refused.

Extra Mile

I don't think IÉ staff are. But as previously mentioned RailGourmet != IÉ. You can get their name and nominate them for an Extra Mile award instead, assuming you can find the form on the IÉ website or get it at a station.

Hi,

Anyway most of Railgourmet staff are nice. Yes, they a Polish, Latvian etc but they just do their job. It is not their fault that prices are rip-off. Company won tender for catering services in irish trains, and they employed foreign nationals staff.

EnterpriseUser 16-08-2008 13:48

Catering on Irish Rail these days seems to be like the Third Secret of Fatima known to a few in the IR Curia and nobody else except the NIR Enterprises where it assiduously follows the timetable. The rest? Pot luck!

Thomas Ralph 16-08-2008 22:35

Well, on the Cork trains there's usually a snack bar, rarely a trolley, and a few random occasions you get a restaurant service.

On the Rosslare line there's usually a trolley, but only on the trains I don't travel on :/

CSL 17-08-2008 11:32

5 times CDE last month every time a trolley, breakfast available too ex Dublin in the AM

Thomas Ralph 17-08-2008 15:13

I've obviously got my stupid hat on today, what's CDE?

Colm Moore 17-08-2008 15:47

Cork-Dublin Express trains. They are Mk4 trains coming the other way ;)

Sasha 18-08-2008 20:41

By the way, now there are new prices on the train.

Hot baguettes 6,55 (were 6,95)
Water 2,20 (was 2,70)
Lucozade 2,70 (was 3,00)
Crisps 0,95 (were 1,10)
Chocolates 1,10 ( were 1,45 but Dairy Milk bar was even 1,75 :) )

But another products incl teas/coffees are gone up for 5-10 cents.

Mark Gleeson 18-08-2008 21:17

Thats great news, thanks for posting that

James and I did discuss the price issue with a Rail Gourmet manager late last year and we where told a review was ongoing. In particular the price of the dairy milk was accepted as being way off.

Have to say the Rail Gourmet manager was honest enough to admit there was an issue, and indeed they followed through on the price reductions, so fair play to them, just a pity they started of with the high prices

Know an Irish guy who was working for Rail Gourmet about a year back-he didn't give a s**t about anything he did in general and was fired for smoking in the toilets!

Tbh there's a youngish Irish fella working on the CDE-v sound fella presents himself well and is very polite-fair play and he's not even anywhere near IE payscales I'd suspect!!

Thomas Ralph 22-05-2010 08:56

Can't get away from RailGourmet!

I'm on a train at Brussels-midi going to Paris Nord. RailGourmet caters these trains too and has parked a van in front of the entrance to my carriage:mad:
