Mayor’s concern over train safety
By Sharon Conway

THE Mayor of Sligo has voiced his concerns over the safety of the single line on the Sligo-Dublin train route.

Jim McGarry’s daughter and niece were among passengers left stranded following a mechanical fault on the 1pm service last Wednesday.

Speaking to the Sligo Weekender, Mayor McGarry said he would be writing to the MD of Iarnrod Eireann as he has a series of questions, relating to passenger safety, that need to be answered.

“The train was only 15 minutes into the journey when it broke down. How come passengers had to wait for three full hours on the train between Collooney and Ballymote? Why were they kept on the train for so long? Why weren’t buses sent out to them? My daughter and niece were going on their holidays and they missed their flight because of the long delay. Another passenger was extremely agitated and felt claustrophobic. There was no apology and no explanation. If the train went on fire while it was stopped last Wednesday, what was the position of the passengers? Passengers had no idea when they would be getting off the train. Serious questions need to be answered.”

The affected train had to be pushed back by another train to Ballymote station.

Who said the 22ks were perfect?

The mayor of Sligo is worried about safety. What a muppet! Inconvenience yes, but safety? It was probably because of safety concerns that the delay was so long.

God save us from grandstanding local politicians.

PLUMB LOCO 15-07-2009 22:15

The Sligo Lord Mayor may have a valid point about safety, I would prefer to take my chance in one of the MkII type carriages with slam doors not electronically controlled - carriages not full of electrical gear and underfloor motors etc, etc...

Anyway a three hour delay is completely unacceptable - how many of these passengers will never take the train again and how many others will they recount their tales of woe to? Barry Kenny spin your way out of this one.

PS Also with older stock it was possible to open windows for air, not like the hermetically sealed sardine cans (MkIVs, 22000s etc).

The "Mayor" of Sligo should have taken the Mk3s that his colleagues thought weren't good enough for the Sligo line then :)

In fairness, loco hauled sets break down more. Now sure about fires. Brake fires seem more common on DMUs :)

Runs on Monday to Thursday from 10 August until 13 August.
Might as well try to claim the refund on an hours delay

Irish Rail admit the changes, again late
