In London they have basically withdrawn child cash fares, so its either adult or get a smart card. Thats what Dublin is heading towards as well.

As it happened, we did need to buy one adult ticket yesterday, so a child ticket could have been issued under the compromise agreement. However, if I had been travelling alone with my son we would only have needed a child ticket, as I have an annual pass.

Unless the rules have changed recently, a child under 10 in London can travel free with an adult with an Oyster (Leap) card.

A child on their own needs a smartcard or else its full adult fare under TFL rules.

Any children who travel by rail in Dublin should get a smartcard, its cheaper, avoids trouble and indeed it does allow the parent to top the card up instead of handing out money.

Mark is correct. Children up to 10 here can travel on the Tube free if accompanied. They need a photocard to travel alone. Buses on the other hand allow children up to 10 to travel free without anything further. 5-10 need to pay to travel on National Rail.
