I often see wheelchairs put in a coach with no toilet at all, and it would not be easy to get a wheelchair through the gangway between coaches. James |
Going back to the original question, what is the actual rule? Can bikes be carried at peak times on any train with bike racks fitted? As I mentioned before, the rule seems to have been applied differently in different stations.

They cannot be used on any commuter service, even those operated by ICRs with bike racks, at peak times. By Intercity services they mean: Dublin-Cork Dublin-Limerick Dublin-Tralee Dublin-Athlone Dublin-Galway Dublin-Westport Dublin-Waterford Dublin-Sligo Dublin-Rosslare Dublin-Belfast Limerick-Galway Limerick-Limerick Junction Limerick-Ballybrophy Limerick Junction-Waterford |

to Waterford online so if boarding at Waterford, Limerick Junction or Tipp town buy at the ticket office. For the other three stations along the route buy from the ticket checker onboard. |
Too many bikes on trains
This morning I took the 8.27am from Hazelhatch to Heuston. This was a 3 carriage train. There were bikes (not folding ones) in the exit / entrance areas all along the train. The train was packed and there was only standing room all the way into Heuston. A chap with an ordinary bike then decided to board in this area also at Hazelhatch, with the result that people at Adamstown, Clondalkin and Parkwest had either either to manoeuvre past the bike or try to board at another door. The were 5 of us and a bike in this small space in the 1st carriage for the remainder of the journey. This is a safety issue, and also an access issue. What happens if a train has to be evacuated, an wheelchair user wishes to board, or somone injures themselves getting past a bike.

A couple of I've been sorely tempted to accidentally knock a bike into a doorway when getting off which would hardly do the wheel a lot of good. It would be a shame if it fell out of the train entirely and got left behind somewhere like Broombridge.
Mind you, you shouldn't have to board intercity rolling stock for a commuter journey like this. |
